HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO YOU!
Today is the 4th day of Christmas in the 12 days of the season of Christmas, one of our major feasting seasons of the church year, so keep feasting! Today we also commemorate the feast of the Holy Innocents. There is a noon Holy Eucharist with healing service today in the church to observe this feast.
This feast commemorates the story in Matthew 3:13-18 when King Herod, obsessed with keeping a rival king off the throne and hearing of Jesus’ birth from the Wise Men, ordered the slaughter of all male children under the age of two in Bethlehem and the surrounding nation. Here is the Collect for today:
We remember this day, O God, the slaughter of the holy innocents of Bethlehem by the order of King Herod. Receive, we beseech thee, into the arms of thy mercy all innocent victims; and by thy great might frustrate the designs of evil tyrants and establish thy rule of justice, love, and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and
This year New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday and it is also the Feast of the Holy Name. The Prayer Book requires that this feast be celebrated when it falls on a Sunday. For January 1 there will be just two service to celebrate this feast, at 8am Rite I Holy Eucharist and 10am Rite II Holy Eucharist with organ and carols.
