Peter's Post

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

There will be a service of Holy Eucharist in the church tomorrow, on Thanksgiving Day, at 10am.  Start your day of Thanksgiving with prayers and songs of thanks and praise.  Invite family and friends to join you for this service.  Note:  Parish Office is closed Thursday and Friday.  There is no Evening Prayer on Thursday; there will be Morning Prayer as usual on Friday at 8:30am.

ADVENT STARTS THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday we begin a new church year with the season of Advent.  Advent is a season of preparation and anticipation.  The church uses this time to focus on Christ’s second coming at the end of time, and Our Lord's instructions to prepare ourselves and to keep awake “for you know not when the master will return,” and to “be alert at all times, praying that you may have the to stand before the Son of Man."  We have faith that the light of Christ will pierce and overcome the darkness, and so in this time of shorter days we light candles to remind us of Jesus’ light in our lives.

On Sunday at all services we light the first of four candles on our Advent Wreath.  We will also be using our new blue vestments, donated in memory of parishioner Rosalind Abbott, mother of Linda Abbott.  These will be dedicated at the 9am service.  The Old English blue is a traditional color for Advent dating back to medieval times.

Advent is also a time for reflection and renewal.  What might you take on as a holy observance this Advent?  Study Scriptures…read a devotional book (check out Church Publishing’s Advent offerings:
https://www.churchpublishing.org/categories/?n=19)... Participate in Advent Lessons and Carols at St. Peters Dec. 6 at 7pm … Attend Morning or Evening Prayer in the church during the week … schedule a quiet day of meditation … go to the Diocesan Quiet Day in Hillsboro (see below) … light an Advent wreath at the family dinner table … volunteer time to help those in need.  How might you make your Advent season more meaningful?

SPECIAL ADULT FORUM SUN. NOV. 29:  3RD ORDER OF FRANCISCANS

Did you know that there are Episcopal Franciscans?  The Order of St. Francis consists of monks, sisters, and lay people who follow the rule of St. Francis.  One of our parishioners, Bonnie Barnidge, has been for many years a lay Franciscan, belonging to the Third Order of the Society of St. Francis.

Bonnie has agreed to lead an Adult Forum in the Library this Sunday between the 9am and 11am worship services, to talk about the Third Order of Franciscans.  At this time, the Order is deep in conversation on the topic that St. Francis raised:  “Rebuild my Church” and Bonnie will share what is being talked about within the Order on that topic.

All are invited to learn more about this little publicized part of our Episcopal Church.  Grab some coffee and come to the library this Sunday at 10:15am to hear more about the Third Order of Franciscans in our church.

YOUTH SUNDAY; CHRISTMAS PAGEANT

This Sunday is Youth Sunday.  Youth will be taking on most of the worship ministries at the 9am service.  The Children’s Choir will perform.  High School Senior Breanne Hall will be the preacher at this service as well.

The Children’s Christmas Pageant will be held on Sunday, December 20 between the 9am and 11am services.  For the next three Sundays, during the Sunday School hour, rehearsals will be held for the pageant.  This Sunday we will get organized and assign roles.  There are speaking and non-speaking parts, parts for singers, and backstage positions --  something for everyone who participates.  Being present at Sunday rehearsals is required to be part of the pageant.  Contact Sherri Hall for more information:
hallshome@comcast.net.

TRAILBLAZERS BAKE SALE

Great thanks to all who helped out and all who purchased goods at the Trailblazers Youth Group Bake Sale.  Over $450 was raised for the youth group.  Thank you!

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS AND GREENS

In this Sunday’s bulletin, look for order forms for Christmas flowers.  Forms can also be found at the Parish Office.  Deadline for orders is December 20.

OFFICE SPACE FOR LEASE IN PARISH ANNEX

We are looking for a new tenant to occupy Suite C on the first floor of the Parish Annex.  Please spread the word and encourage inquiries.  Renting space helps to pay the costs of operating the building, and since it’s currently vacant, the parish is having to absorb more costs.  The listing is with Sperry Van Ness.  It is featured currently on our parish website, and information can be found at:

ADVENT QUIET DAY NOV. 30

Come Let Us Adore Him:  Letting Go, Responding Lovingly is the topic of an Advent Quiet Day at the Diocesan Retreat House at St. Paul’s Hillsboro on Monday, November 30 from 10am to 3pm, with lunch being provided.  The Quiet Day will be led by renowned Episcopal Church preacher and retreat leader Fr. Martin Smith.  All are invited to attend, but registration is needed.

This will be a time of reflection and prayer to help prepare for the celebration of Christ’s coming to us in humility and love.  Three short presentations by Fr. Martin Smith will focus on letting go of inhibition and fear, and finding our own freedom to respond lovingly to God.  Each address will be followed by an opportunity for personal prayer and meditation.

Gift yourself a spiritual gift – retreat for a day of quiet and reflection this Advent.  Come to the Advent Quiet Day.  To register, email
francie@retreathousehillsboro.org to indicate your intention to be part of a wonderful day.  Space is limited.  Free will offering, suggested donation $35.

ADVENT STUDY SERIES AT COMFORTER'S GROUP MEETINGS

St. Peter's Comforter's Group will be studying the booklet "Living Well Through Advent 2015" at its 10am Monday meetings.  Dr. Barbara Anne Fisher will be presenting studies from the book on Nov. 30 and Dec. 7, 14, and 21.  All are welcomed to attend.  The Comforters Group meets in the Parish Library.  The book presentation and discussion will occur after the group prays its customary prayers of intercession for those in need.
