Peter's Post

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING

This Sunday we celebrate the ending of another church year with the Feast of Christ the King, rejoicing at the Kingship of Jesus, our King of Kings and Lord of Lords, seated on his heavenly throne.  The following Sunday, November 29, begins another church year with the First Sunday of Advent.

ADVENT/CHRISTMAS CRAFT ACTIVITY

This Sunday we prepare for Advent with our annual Advent activity in the Parish Hall for all families and children in the Parish.

There will be several stations set up for children to make Advent and Christmas crafts.  There will be some Advent wreath materials to take home and make your wreath with fresh greens.  There will also be a station for making a very unique Advent calendar.  Both Advent crafts will have take-home information on the history and symbolism of each craft.

We will have other stations set up for making Christmas tree ornaments and Christmas cards.  This is a new addition to our traditional Advent activity, and we hope that it will be a new and fun way to start off our Advent season.  Of course there will be food goodies and music enjoy!

Please plan to come and support this event and begin the special season of Advent with your family by making some fun items that can be enjoyed throughout the season.  Contact Kathy Willey
(443-523-5632)or Bravard Cornbrooks (410-430-4053) if you are able to help with this project.  Thank you!

TRAILBLAZERS BAKE SALE

Just in time for Thanksgiving, our Trailblazers Youth Group is holding their bake sale in the Parish Library during coffee hour this Sunday between all worship services, from 8:40am until 11:00am.  Come by and stock up for the holiday and help support the work of our Youth Group.  Thank you for your generosity.

BLESSINGS TREE AND THIRD FRIDAY

The theme of this November Third Friday Downtown is “Light” and we want to help brighten the season of Thanksgiving by reflecting on our blessings.  Youngsters will begin decorating a “Blessings Tree” this Friday by writing down a blessing in their life and putting it on our “Blessings Tree.”  Children in the parish and all others are encouraged to stop by St. Peter’s while they are at the Third Friday festivities welcomed to participate in this craft Friday evening from 5pm to 8pm.  Other “blessings” from young people and adults in the parish can be added to the tree this Sunday.  We hope to fill the tree with blessings by Thanksgiving, and to share some of these blessings on our Facebook page and on the monitor at coffee hour.

St. Peter’s will also be helping warm things up on Third Friday by selling chili in the courtyard and raising some awareness (and some funds) for St. Peter’s during the event.  Come by and tell your friends and neighbors to check out St. Peter’s for children’s activities and chili.

CHF SUNDAY CELEBRATION:
The Children’s Home Foundation is an exciting program in our diocese which offers scholarships and camperships to students on the Eastern Shore.  It is a powerful and effective Episcopal outreach program which changes lives.  This coming Sunday is CHF Sunday.  Ann Allen will speak briefly at each service.  Envelopes will be provided in the pews to help support this wonderful ministry, although many parishioners are also receiving Thanksgiving Appeal mailing this month.

THANKSGIVING SERVICE

There will be a service of Holy Eucharist on Thanksgiving Day at 10am in the Church.  Invite friends and family and start your Thanksgiving with worshipful thanks and praise to God.

The Parish Office is closed on Thanksgiving Day and the next day as well.  Thursday Evening Prayer will not take place on Thanksgiving Day.

SPECIAL ADULT FORUM SUN. NOV. 29:  3RD ORDER OF FRANCISCANS

Did you know that there are Episcopal Franciscans?  The Order of St. Francis consists of monks, sisters, and lay people who follow the rule of St. Francis.  One of our parishioners, Bonnie Barnidge, has been for many years a lay Franciscan, belonging to the Third Order of the Society of St. Francis.

Bonnie has agreed to lead an Adult Forum in the Library on Sunday, November 29, between the 9am and 11am worship services, to talk about the Third Order of Franciscans.  The Order is deep in conversation on the topic that St. Francis raised:  “Rebuild my Church” and Bonnie will share what is being talked about within the Order on that topic.

All are invited to learn more about this little publicized part of our Episcopal Church.  A brochure on the Third Order is available on the table outside the Parlor. Come to this special Adult Forum Sunday, November 29 at 10:15 in the Parish Library.

OFFICE SPACE FOR LEASE IN PARISH ANNEX

We are looking for a new tenant to occupy Suite C on the first floor of the Parish Annex.  Please spread the word and encourage inquiries.  Renting space helps to pay the costs of operating the building, and since it’s currently vacant, the parish is having to absorb more costs.  The listing is with Sperry Van Ness.  It is featured currently on our parish website, and information can be found at:

ADVENT QUIET DAY NOV. 30

Come Let Us Adore Him:  Letting Go, Responding Lovingly is the topic of an Advent Quiet Day at the Diocesan Retreat House at St. Paul’s Hillsboro on Monday, November 30 from 10am to 3pm, with lunch being provided.  The Quiet Day will be led by renowned Episcopal Church preacher and retreat leader Fr. Martin Smith.  All are invited to attend, but registration is needed.

This will be a time of reflection and prayer to help prepare for the celebration of Christ’s coming to us in humility and love.  Three short presentations by Fr. Martin Smith will focus on letting go of inhibition and fear, and finding our own freedom to respond lovingly to God.  Each address will be followed by an opportunity for personal prayer and meditation.

Gift yourself a spiritual gift – retreat for a day of quiet and reflection this Advent.  Come to the Advent Quiet Day.  To register, email
francie@retreathousehillsboro.org to indicate your intention to be part of a wonderful day.  Space is limited.  Free will offering, suggested donation $35.
