PARISH PICNIC THIS SUNDAY!
Plan to come to St. Peter’s Annual Parish Picnic this Sunday, May 31, as we travel to Cedar Hill Park on the shores of the Nanticoke River in Bivalve, MD for good food, fun and fellowship together. We’ll begin with an outdoor worship service at 10am followed by our annual picnic on the grounds of the park. It’s also Youth Sunday so our young folks will be taking on many worship ministries at the service. Families are encouraged to attend as our children will be receiving their Sunday School and Altar Server awards, and we’ll honor our Sunday School teachers for their ministry and dedication teaching our children this past academic year. Remember to bring lawn chairs or a picnic blanket for the 10am service (if you have extra chairs, you might want to have them handy in case someone is in need of one for the service).
For the parish picnic: Please bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share. Hamburgers, hot dogs and fried chicken entrees as well as drinks will be provided, courtesy of your Fellowship and Hospitality Committee. We could also use some play balls and lawn games too. Note that on that Sunday there will also be an 8:00am service in the church.
Note: In case of rain, we will have our 10am service in the church and the picnic in the Parish Hall. If it looks threatening Sunday morning, consult the parish website about a rain decision: www.stpeterschurch.net.
SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE NOW IN EFFECT
Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, St. Peter’s Sunday worship services will be at 8:00am (Rite I) and 10:00am (Rite II with music). We will continue to have Wednesday Noon Holy Eucharist throughout the summer, except on those weeks when the Rector is away at General Convention or on vacation.
COMBINED HANDBELL CHOIR CONCERT JUNE 7
The handbell ensembles of Saint Peter’s and Wicomico Presbyterian Churches are proud to join in a collaborative concert on Sunday, June 7 at 4:00 PM. The concert will be held at the Langeler Memorial Building of Wicomico Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, MD 21801. Admission is free. A free-will offering will be taken and be divided between the music ministries from both churches.
A quartet from the Grace Notes Bells at St. Peter’s will be featured in two selections. Both churches have participated in the Handbell Musicians of America Festival in Ocean City with more than 500 other bell players for several years.
The program is varied and more than 120 bells and chimes will be used in a variety of ways to present the program of sacred, concert and show music. Wicomico Presbyterian Music Director Susan Zimmer is featured playing a flute solo on “Abide with Me,” one of the Handbell Festival selections. The closing and entertaining package of concert songs includes three selections from Phantom of the Opera. Here is the complete program:
Get Rich Processional
Duke Street Demonstration
Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho
Abide With Me Arr. Cathy Moklebust
Holy Manna (a Merry Mallet Melody)
We Are Climbing Jacob’s Ladder Arr. Valerie W. Stephenson
Offering (St. Peter’s Grace Notes Quartet)
My Faith Looks Up to Thee
“He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands”
Selections from The Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber,
Arr. by Douglas E. Wagner
Joyful, Joyful, Arr. Margaret Tucker
It has been a wonderful year of activity for both groups and your presence and free will offering will enable us to enhance both churches’ ministries in and out of the church. Funds collected will go toward accessories and subsidy for members to attend learning and growing events such as the festival in Ocean City and workshops.
NEW SIGN UP SYSTEM FOR ALTAR FLOWERS INTRODUCED
Now posted on the bulletin board in the Parish House hallway are reservation cards and a calendar for reserving your Sunday for Altar Flowers in memory or in honor of loved ones. Similar to the calendar for reserving weeks for the Sanctuary Light, the Altar Flowers Calendar allows parishioners to reserve a Sunday in advance for 2015. Once reserved, you will be reminded the week before about your commitment to contact a florist and arrange for flowers to be delivered to the church for placement by the Altar Guild on the altar. You may want to check the calendar every so often and if no one has offered to provide flowers for the next Sunday, to sign up for that Sunday.
There have been a number of Sundays this year in which no one has pledged to provide flowers for the altar. The Altar Guild has decided to work with Kitty’s Flowers to make sure there are flowers on the altar for those open Sundays so our altars will continue to be appropriately adorned. The cost for flowers on those Sundays will come from the Altar Guild Fund. The Fund is used to purchase all altar supplies, and so the more Sundays that parishioners are able to take for flowers, the less that will be needed from the fund to pay for flowers. Donations to the Altar Guild are always appreciated and these donations will help ensure that we have flowers on the altar every appropriate Sunday. Altar Flower Fund donation envelopes can be found on the table outside the Parlor and from the Parish Office.
LIMITED PARISH OFFICE HOURS NEXT WEEK
For the week of June 1 our Parish Secretary, Cathy Parsons, is taking a well-deserved vacation. We will try to staff the Parish Office in the mornings with volunteer help. Father David will maintain his usual office hours Monday through Thursday. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Cathy will return after vacation on Monday, June 8.
