Peter's Post

HAPPY EPIPHANY!

Today we celebrate one of the principal feast days of the church:  the Epiphany, or the Manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.  This is the day we remember the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child.  We have concluded our Christmas Season observances and will now be in the season after Epiphany until Ash Wednesday, February 10, which is the first day of Lent.

The will be an observance of the Epiphany this evening at 6pm with Holy Eucharist in the church, followed by a Cajun Dinner in the Parish Hall featuring jambalaya, red beans and rice and King Cake for dessert (wear your Mardi Gras beads if you have them!).  After dinner we’ll go upstairs to the church and work off our meal by taking down the Christmas decorations.  All are invited.  Note:  there will be incense used at the service.

BRUCE HORNER FUNERAL: JAN. 23

On Monday evening, January 5, our Music Director Bruce Horner passed away at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, Delaware.  He suffered cardiac arrest on December 22 and had been unconscious in a coma in ICU since then.  At his death he was surrounded by his family including his wife Sallie.

“Through Bruce’s hard work and dedication we have seen a blossoming of our music ministries at St. Peter’s,” said St. Peter’s Rector, Father David Michaud.  “His death is a shock to our parish, and he will be greatly missed, but what he has done for this church will not be forgotten.  We can take comfort in Our Lord’s promise of eternal life, and know that he is now at peace in the care of our Savior Jesus Christ.”

Please keep Bruce’s family in your prayers during this difficult time.

This afternoon it was announced that a funeral for Bruce Horner will take place on Saturday, January 23 at 2pm in St. Peter’s Church with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.  Friends may call on the family at 12:30pm that day in the Parlor.  His remains will be interred at Parsons Cemetery.

This funeral will have an abundance of music and musical talent.  Plans are underway for a combined choir, soloists and instrumentalists to be part of the service.  More details to follow.

ROBERT YOUNG ANNOUNCED AS INTERIM MUSIC DIRECTOR

Robert Young has agreed to be St. Peter’s Interim Music Director for the month of January, taking over many of the responsibilities of Bruce Horner.  Robert just retired at the end of December as the organist and music director for Asbury UMC in Salisbury.

Discussions are underway about the future of the music program at St. Peter’s.  Representatives of the parish’s music ministries met with the Rector, Father David, and Robert this past Sunday afternoon to discuss what needs to be done to ensure that the parish’s music programs continue in the short term.  Discussion of the future of music at St. Peter’s will be on the agenda at the Vestry’s January meeting later this month.

BISHOP VISITS SUNDAY, JANUARY 17

The Rt. Rev. Henry Parsley, Bishop Provisional of the Diocese of Easton, visits St. Peter’s on Sunday, January 17.  He will preside and preach at the 9am and the 11am worship services. At the 9am service he will also receive Chad and Maria Stewart and Nivek Johnson as new members of the Episcopal Church.  Please keep Chad, Maria and Nivek in your prayers as they prepare to be received into our church.

SANCTUARY CANDLES – WEEKS AVAILABLE IN 2016

The 2016 sign up calendar has now been posted on the bulletin board in the hallway in the Parish House for weeks in 2016 for the Family Altar Sanctuary Candle.  Donation is $10 per week and helps defray the cost of the candle that the Altar Guild keeps lit for the Reserved Sacrament in the tabernacles.  You may sign up for an open week to have the candle burn in memory or in honor of loved ones.  Take a look at what’s available during coffee hour after worship.

RECTOR AWAY NEXT WEEK

Father David Michaud will be away visiting his parents in Portland, Oregon from this coming Monday, January 11 through Friday, January 15. He will be back in time for Sunday, January 17 services.  Deacon Buddy Murray will officiate at the Wednesday Noon Healing Service.  Contact the Wardens during that time for any Pastoral Emergencies.

MEN’S HOMELESS SHELTER JAN. 16-22

Thank you so much all those who have signed up to volunteer for St. Peter’s week of the emergency men’s shelter Jan 16-22 in the Parish Hall.  We are in pretty good shape for staffing this program -- overnight watch, checking in guests, and helping with the evening meals. Take a look at the sign up sheet in the hallway outside the parlor at coffee hour this Sunday to see where help is still needed.   Bill Day is organizing the overnights, and Trudy Day is organizing the dinners.  Please contact them for more information.

Thank you for helping with this important and life-saving ministry!
