Dispatch from the General Convention

Father David is away these two weeks at General Convention.  He sent this dispatch yesterday evening from the Salt Palace, the convention center where General Convention is being held.
I arrived in Salt Lake City, site of the 78th General Convention of the Episcopal Church, on Saturday afternoon when the temperature was 102 degrees.  I have spent the last four days working and overseeing the set up of the many computer systems at General Convention that track resolutions, the seating of deputies, elections, and the new virtual binder.  It’s been long days setting up what is like a city in the convention center where up to 10,000 people will participate, especially this year, when the General Convention will elect the new Presiding Bishop.
The General Convention is composed of two bodies:  The House of Deputies and the House of Bishops.  The General Convention is the highest earthly authority for the Episcopal Church, and any resolutions or changes to church canons must be approved by both Houses.  This year I am one of the four clergy Deputies to General Convention from the Diocese of Easton.
In addition I am the Assistant Secretary for Digital Systems and will sit near the President and the Secretary of the House of Deputies.  A major change this year is to go from getting information on paper to getting information on IPads.  Every Deputy and Bishop is loaned an IPad especially configured to receive information on resolutions, elections, and actions of both Houses.  My role this year is to make sure the information that is being received on IPads is correct, and I’ll be following the action on the House floor and conveying that to the IPads.
Just picture a huge warehouse sized room with 875 Deputies each with an iPad going through 200+ resolutions in a period of 10 days and that’s what’s in store for this General Convention.
I’ve now wrapped up most of the testing of the systems by the 50 or so volunteers that support the legislative process in the Secretariat and things are looking good.  My fingers are crossed and I’m saying my prayers that tomorrow’s first legislative day will go well.
This afternoon Bishops and Deputies assembled to hear from the four candidates for Presiding Bishop:  Bishops Thomas Breidenthal (So. Ohio), Michael Curry (North Carolina), Ian Douglas (Connecticut) and Dabney Smith (Southwest Florida).  It was a very informative session and displayed the many gifts and talents that each possessed.  The House of Bishops votes on the position on Saturday.  I was impressed with all of them – the Bishops have a tough choice.
Finally, I was able to take a peek at the exhibit area, filled with exhibitors from many aspects of church life, from missionary societies, seminaries, church services and pipe organ manufacturers to  manufacturers of vestments, church vessels, statues and icons.  I’ll definitely want to return and spend more time there.
It is a privilege to serve at General Convention, and rest assured I will do my best to represent St. Peter’s and the Diocese of Easton, and to do what I can to  help ensure a good, holy and productive General Convention.
I’ll send you an update in next week’s Peter’s Post.
Yours in Christ,
Father David
