Peter's Post

THIS SUNDAY IS GAUDETE SUNDAY

The Third Sunday of Advent is traditionally called Gaudete Sunday, gaudete being the Latin word for “rejoice” from the ancient introit antiphon “Rejoice in the Lord always.”  The theme of the day expresses the joy of anticipation at the approach of the Christmas celebration.  This theme reflected a lightening of the tone of the traditional Advent observance. This Sunday is also known as “Rose Sunday.” This custom is reflected by the practice of including a rose-colored candle among the four candles of our Advent wreath.

CHRISTMAS CAROLING SUNDAY AFTERNOON

St. Peter’s is going Christmas Caroling this Sunday afternoon to a number of parishioners who aren’t able to come to church – we’re going to bring some Christmas cheer to them! You are invited to join Peter’s Voice, the Trailblazers Youth Group, children, parents, and other caroling enthusiasts as we travel by bus to bring Christmas songs and treats to fellow parishioners.  Meet in the Parish House at 3:30pm.  We’ll get organized and head out after 4pm for a two hour tour.  For more information, contact Laura McCarthy at
ljmccarthy1966@gmail.com.

CHRISTMAS PAGEANT REHEARSALS

A reminder for all youth who want to participate in the Christmas Pageant on Sunday, December 20:  there are two more rehearsals scheduled:  this Sunday, December 13 between the 9am and 11am services, and a final dress rehearsal on Saturday, December 19 at 9am in the Parish Hall.  Please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

GREENING OF THE CHURCH: DECEMBER 20

Help is needed to decorate the Church for Christmas.  It is our tradition to keep Advent until the last service on the fourth and last Sunday of Advent, which this year is December 20.  So we will decorate the church at 12:15pm Sunday afternoon, after the conclusion of the 11am service.  Help is needed to put up greens and a Christmas tree, and to set up the crèche.  Mark your calendar and help out.  All are welcome.

SIGN UP THIS SUNDAY TO HELP WITH THE MEN’S HOMELESS SHELTER

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matthew 25:35)

Thank you to those who signed up last Sunday to help with St. Peter’s hosting of Salisbury’s community emergency shelter program on January 16 through 22.  There are still many overnights open that need volunteers and two dinners that need to be provided.  Take a look at the sign up sheet in the hallway outside the parlor at coffee hour this Sunday and sign up to help.  Volunteers are needed for overnight watch, for helping check in guests, and to help with the evening meals.  Bill Day is organizing the overnights, and Trudy Day is organizing the dinners.  Please contact them for more information.

Thank you for helping with this important and life-saving ministry!

CHRISTMAS PROJECT FOR OUR PARTNER SCHOOL WI-MIDDLE

This Sunday is the deadline for turning in gift cards from Kohl’s, Wal-Mart and Old Navy to give to the coordinator of the CARES program at Wi-Middle to help her purchase items for needy children and their families for Christmas.  If you would like to participate, purchase a gift card in the amount you would like, place it in an envelope with the amount marked on the outside, and place gift cards in a pocket at the Wi-Middle Christmas Project display in the Parlor or send them to the Parish Office.  Thank you!

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS AND GREENS

Remember the Deadline for Christmas flowers and greens order forms is December 20.  Poinsettia suggested donation is $10 per plant.  Forms are available on the table outside the Parlor at coffee hour and also from the Parish Office.

ADULT BAPTISM CLASS

A class is forming for adults who have not been baptized and who are interested exploring membership in the church through the sacrament of baptism.  The classes will be taught by the Rector.  Classes will be held on a weekly basis in January through March at a time convenient to those who enroll in the class.  Those who complete the class are able to receive the sacrament of Baptism during the Great Vigil of Easter, on Easter Eve, March 26.  Contact Father David for more information and to register for the class.

OFFICE SPACE FOR LEASE IN PARISH ANNEX

We are looking for a new tenant to occupy Suite C on the first floor of the Parish Annex.  Please spread the word and encourage inquiries.  Renting space helps to pay the costs of operating the building, and since it’s currently vacant, the parish is having to absorb more costs.  The listing is with Sperry Van Ness.  It is featured currently on our parish website, and information can be found at:

Pastoral News

Kate Allen, daughter of Ann and Gil Allen, will marry Nelson Dyer at the service of the Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage on Saturday afternoon, December 19, in St. Peter’s Church, the Rev. David Michaud officiating.  Please keep Kate and Nelson in your prayers as they prepare for this joyful occasion.
