FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT:  Honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Fourth Sunday of Advent is the traditional time when we hear a gospel lesson about Mary at our worship services.  Some years we hear the story of the angel Gabriel’s announcement to Mary.  This year we hear about Mary’s visitation to her cousin Elizabeth, and how on greeting Mary who is now pregnant with child, the child in Elizabeth’s womb – John the Baptist – leapt for joy.  This is also the place where Mary responds with that famous Canticle, the Magnificat, which we will say on Sunday in place of the psalm. At the Visitation, Elizabeth exclaims to Mary, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.”

GREENING OF THE CHURCH THIS SUNDAY

Come help decorate our beautiful church for Christmas this Sunday after the 11am Service.  Help is needed to hang greens, set out the crèche, and decorate.  All are welcome to participate.  We’ll plan to get started around 12:15pm.

CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS PAGEANT THIS SUNDAY

This Sunday the youth of the church will produce their annual Christmas Pageant.  The program begins at 10:15am in the Parish Hall.  All are invited to attend and support our talented youth.

Dress rehearsal for the Pageant is this Saturday at 9am in the Parish Hall.  All participants in the pageant must attend this rehearsal.  Contact Sherri Hall at
hallshome@comcast.net for more information.

MORNING PRAYER TIME CHANGE SATURDAY

Because of the many rehearsals and events scheduled for this Saturday, December 19, Morning Prayer will be held at 7:30am for this Saturday only.

OFFERING ENVELOPES

Offering envelopes for 2016 are now available for you to pick up in the back of the church.  Find your name and pick up your envelopes as you head into church.  Don’t see your name?  Let an usher or the Parish Office know and we’ll see that you get a set all your own.

HOLIDAY DRIVE FOR LIFE CRISIS CENTER

Our local women’s shelter, the Life Crisis Center, is in need of supplies for its facility and has asked for donations from St. Peter’s.  We will be accepting these donations this Sunday only, at all services, and then delivering them to the shelter.  Thank you for any donations you can make.  Here’s their wish list:

Paper plates, paper towels, paper cups, toilet paper, toilet bowl cleaner, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, gallon & quart size freezer bags, broom & mop, snow salt (not harmful to kids or pets), plastic containers with study scoops to put the salt in, one set of jumper cables, HE clothes detergent in the pods, bleach.

THE OTHER FEAST DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

Did you know that Christmas (Dec. 25) and Epiphany (Jan. 6) are not the only feasts on the Church calendar at this time of year?  There’s also St. Thomas the Apostle Day (Mon., Dec. 21), St. Stephen, Deacon and Martyr, Day (Sat., Dec 26) St. John, Apostle and Evangelist, Day (Sun., Dec 27) The Holy Innocents Day (Mon., Dec 28) and Holy Name Day (Fri., Jan 1).  Now that we have the practice of Daily Prayer in the church, we have the opportunity to celebrate all the feasts of the Christmas Season on their appointed days.  You are welcome any day of the week to come to St. Peter’s for prayer and worship.  Why not make Morning Prayer, Noon Eucharist, or Evening Prayer part of your devotional practice, particular on these feast days?

Here’s a reminder of our weekday service times
Monday: Morning Prayer 9:30am
Tuesday: Evening Prayer 5:30pm
Wednesday: Holy Eucharist, 12noon
Thursday: Evening Prayer, 5:00pm
Friday: Morning Prayer, 8:30am
Saturday, Morning Prayer, 8:30am (note: this Sat., Dec 19, 7:30am)

WI-MIDDLE CHRISTMAS GIFT CARDS DRIVE

Below are pictures of the gifts the Wi Middle CARES program are preparing for needy families with students at the school.  Much of this abundance is due to the generosity of our parishioners, through our two week collection of gift cards.  I took the last ones to the school earlier this week, and the total contribution now stands at $835.00.  The school is overwhelmed and so grateful, they have been able to do so much with our gift cards!  I think it's pretty impressive!  Thanks to all of you for supporting this outreach to our partner school, Wi-Middle! –Judy Wyatt, Chair, Outreach Committee

CHRISTMAS CAROLING REPORT

Thank you to everyone who participated in making this year's Christmas Caroling Extravaganza a success!  Thanks to members of the Pastoral Caring Team for making or purchasing baked goods or other goodies for gift bags. Thanks to Linda Abbot and Jimmy Hill for helping sort and package the cookies. Thanks to Anne and Sean Fahey for making a delicious spaghetti dinner to eat before we headed out. And for Kathy Fahey's yummy buttermilk pie! Thanks to Anne Fahey and Nivek Johnson for contacting the parents and encouraging the kids to participate.  Thanks to the kids and parents and other members who showed up to sing.  Thanks to my buddies in Peter's Voice for providing the accompaniment.  And a special thanks to Robert and Vickie Smith for providing their sleigh (aka School Bus) to get us to the homes.  There were lots of smiles and laughs and even a few tears.  It was a beautiful evening! –Laura McCarthy, Pastoral Committee Chair

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED TO HELP WITH THE MEN’S HOMELESS SHELTER

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” (Matthew 25:35)

Thank you to those who have signed up to help with St. Peter’s hosting of Salisbury’s community emergency shelter program on January 16 through 22.  There are still overnights open that need volunteers and dinners that need to be provided.  Take a look at the sign up sheet in the hallway outside the parlor at coffee hour this Sunday and sign up to help.  Volunteers are needed for overnight watch, for helping check in guests, and to help with the evening meals.  Bill Day is organizing the overnights, and Trudy Day is organizing the dinners.  Please contact them for more information.

Thank you for helping with this important and life-saving ministry!

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS AND GREENS DEADLINE SUNDAY

Remember all Christmas flowers and greens order forms are due in this Sunday, December 20.  Poinsettia suggested donation is $10 per plant.  Forms are available on the table outside the Parlor at coffee hour and also from the Parish Office.

ADULT BAPTISM CLASS

A class is forming for adults who have not been baptized and who are interested exploring membership in the church through the sacrament of baptism.  The classes will be taught by the Rector.  Classes will be held on a weekly basis in January through March at a time convenient to those who enroll in the class.  Those who complete the class are able to receive the sacrament of Baptism during the Great Vigil of Easter, on Easter Eve, March 26.  Contact Father David for more information and to register for the class.

Pastoral News

Kate Allen, daughter of Ann and Gil Allen, will marry Nelson Dyer at the service of the Celebration and Blessing of a Marriage on Saturday afternoon, December 19, in St. Peter’s Church, the Rev. David Michaud officiating.  Please keep Kate and Nelson in your prayers as they prepare for this joyful occasion.
