Peter's Post

A Blessed Advent to you!

Advent Lessons and Carols Sunday Evening
There will be a service of Advent Lessons and Carols this Sunday evening at 7pm in the church.  During that service an offering will be taken for the Shepherd’s Crook outreach program at St. Paul’s by the Sea in Ocean City.  St. Paul’s lost its Rector, the Rev. David Dingwall, and its Rectory in a devastating fire on November 26.  The Rectory housed the Shepherd’s Cook program which provided meals and assistance to those in need.  The collection at this service will go towards helping the parish to resupply that much needed ministry.  St. Alban’s in Salisbury has been invited to be part of Advent Lessons and Carols, so this service and offering  is a way for the Episcopal Churches in Salisbury to come together in worship and to offer support for St. Paul’s .
The service itself will consist of six Scripture lessons and six carols, some sung by the choir and some with the congregation joining in.  It begins with candles being lit to signify Christ’s light piercing and overcoming the darkness, and a bidding that encourages the observance of a Holy Advent.
St. Peter’s Rector, the Rev. David Michaud, and St. Alban’s Rector, the Very Rev. Frieda Malcolm, will officiate.  Members of St. Peter’s Festival Choir and St. Alban’s Choir will perform, as will St. Peter’s Bell Choir. Plan to come and attend this beautiful and moving service, and invite others to attend as well.

Choir Rehearsals for Advent Lessons and Carols:  Tonight at 7pm; Saturday at 9:45am

Canned Food Drive Continues this Sunday
During Sundays in Advent we will be collecting nonperishable food items at each worship service for delivery to organizations that feed the hungry here in our communityAs part of our outreach ministry in December, the Outreach Committee is highlighting a different local organization each week.  This Sunday all the food collected will be delivered to the Christian Shelter.  When you’re out shopping this week, why not put a few extra items in your shopping cart for those in need, and bring your canned goods or other nonperishable items to church this Sunday.  Thank you!

Poinsettia/Greens order DEADLINE & payment are due THIS SUNDAY.  Forms will be available in your Sunday Bulletin or at the Parish Office. Please, make checks payable to: St. Peter's Church.

What’s with the door wreaths with blue bows?

A few people have asked me why St. Peter’s is sporting wreaths of greens with blue bows on the church doors.  These wreaths were hung on every church entrance for the first Sunday of Advent and will remain up throughout the Advent Season.  A wreath on a door at this time of year is a welcoming sign, is an invitation to enter, which emphasizes and reminds us of one of our parish goals this year:  “to welcome Newcomers and incorporate them into our community.”   One of the Anglican Church’s most ancient colors for Advent is the color blue, which is the color of bows on the wreaths to indicate the season, and differentiating them from the Christmas wreaths we will be hanging on the doors for the Christmas season, which begins on Christmas Eve.

Café Night Successful
Thank you to everyone who came out last Sunday evening for the EYC Italian Café Night.  More than $500 was raised for the youth group’s activities.  Thank you also to the youth of our parish who helped out and their parents and adults that contributed toward this delicious and fun evening.

2014 Church Kalendars on Sale
A few 2014 Church Kalendars from the Diocese are still available for sale for $2.50 each.  You can purchase yours at coffee hour this Sunday, or by visiting the Parish Office during the week.

Pastoral News

Did you know?  On the first and third Sundays of the month Eucharistic Visitors from St. Peter’s are taking Holy Communion from Sunday worship to parishioners who are unable to come to church.  The Bread and Wine taken by the Eucharistic Visitors are consecrated on the altar on that Sunday morning, and given by the priest to the Visitors at the end of Communion so that those parishioners who are taken Holy Communion are part of that Sunday’s congregation.  St. Peter’s licensed lay Eucharistic Visitors are Laura McCarthy, Tom Clarke, Sally Thrash, Nancy McFadden, Bravard Cornbrooks and Mary Grauer.  If you know of a parishioner that would be interested in receiving Holy Communion by a Eucharistic Visitor, please contact Father David.
