Peter's Post

IT’S CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST!
During coffee hour you might notice a Christmas tree set up in the corner – no, we haven’t confused our liturgical seasons:  it’s the Outreach Committee’s 2nd annual Christmas in August project, when we help stock the CARES room in our partner school Wi-Middle with much needed clothes prior to the start of the upcoming school year.

Did you know that some students at that school are in need of basic items of clothing throughout the year?  Last year St. Peter’s collected enough clothing to stock the CARES room for the year, and we’ve committed to do that again this year.  Will you help make that happen?

Just take one or more ornaments off the tree in the parlor this Sunday which list specific items of clothing, shop for those items, bring them to church this month and place in the collection receptacle.  All the items will be delivered to Wi-Middle Labor Day weekend.   Thank you for your generous support for this important outreach ministry.
I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing. (Matt: 25:35-36)

BLESSING FOR SENIORS
This Sunday at the 10am worship service Father David will offer a blessing and prayers for our graduated high school seniors who are heading off soon for college.

COTTAGE MEETINGS FOR PARISH DISCERNMENT ANNOUNCED
Every parishioner is invited to participate in discussions this September about the future of St. Peter’s Church – who we are and who we want to be.  The Discernment Committee is organizing a series of “cottage meetings” of 10-12 people facilitated by a member of the Vestry at the church during the first two weeks of September and every parishioner is encouraged to sign up for a meeting time.  Sign up sheets for these meetings will be at coffee hour this Sunday and throughout the month of August.
Here are the dates and times for the meetings:
Wednesday, Sept. 7th (10 a.m. & 7 p.m.);
Thursday, Sept. 8th (7 p.m.);
Sunday, Sept. 11th (1 p.m.);
Monday, Sept. 12th (10 a.m., 7 p.m.);
Tuesday, Sept. 13th (7 p.m.);
Wednesday, Sept. 14th (7 p.m.); and
Sunday, Sept. 18th (10:15 a.m.)

A letter about the Discernment Process from Father David is being mailed to all parish households this week, with details about these meetings and other plans and activities for the fall.  Look for your letter in the mail.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL BEGINS THIS SUNDAY EVENING
Space is still available for youth to sign up for the Wicomico Episcopal Churches’ Vacation Bible School (V.B.S.) from Sunday, August 7 through Thursday, August 11 from 5pm to 8pm – the first three days will be hosted at St. Peter’s and the last two days will be hosted by St. Alban’s, Salisbury.

Registration forms and information are available on the VBS page on our parish website:
http://www.stpeterschurch.net/education/vacation-bible-school/. Registration forms are also available on the table by the parlor at coffee hour this Sunday, and from the Parish Office.

St. Peter’s is hosting Sunday evening’s 5pm dinner – if you are able to help with the dinner, please contact Sherri Hall at (301)807-4017; email:
hallshome@comcast.net.Other volunteer opportunities are available as well. St. Pauls, Hebron, St. Alban’s, and St. Philip’s, Quantico are hosting dinners on other days.

KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEM TO BE INSTALLED IN PARISH HOUSE
Due to the increased use of the Parish House for activities, events and ministries (which is a good thing!), the Vestry upon recommendation from the Property Committee has authorized the installation of a keyless entry system, which would allow anyone with a card or fob to gain access to the Parish House and the upstairs or downstairs entry doors.  The system will be installed next week and should be operational by the end of the month.

This system is less expensive in the long run than continuing to make new keys and it is more flexible, allowing users to open doors only for specific days and times, depending on when the users need access.  Cards can also be deactivated if a person no longer needs access to the Parish House.

Assuming that the installation goes well, we are planning to begin distributing fobs on Sunday, August 14, at coffee hour.  Those who have keys to the Parish House will be asked to swap their key for a fob.  Those who have signed out keys on our key list will have a fob signed out to them.  Those who are not on the current list and those who would like a fob should contact the rector, Fr. David, whom the Vestry has given responsibility for the distribution of fobs and cards for the keyless entry system.
Confirmation of the key distribution times and more information about the system’s operations should be available in next week’s Peter’s Post.

Pastoral News

ANDREW PEVERLEY
A private graveside service will be held this Saturday morning for Andrew Peverley, the son of parishioners Mac and Lynne Peverley, who passed away July 21 after losing his battle with addiction.  Following that, from 12noon until 3pm on Saturday afternoon, Mac and Lynne are hosting a public reception at their house on Riverside Drive (note that the time was omitted from Monday’s pastoral email). The family invites and encourages friends to come to the reception - to visit, share and celebrate with them this remarkable man and his journey.  They ask those who visit to wear bright colors and bring joy and know that his struggles are over and he is at peace.

Please keep Lynne, Mac, and their family in your prayers during this difficult time.
