Peter's Post

Lay Phillips: 1928 - 2013

A Service of the Burial of the Dead, Rite I, for parishioner Lay Phillips will take place tomorrow, Friday August 16 at 1pm at St. Peter’s Church.  Those who wish to express their condolences to the family may come to a visitation at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury this evening, Thursday, August 15, from 5pm to 7pm.  A private internment will occur at a later date. There will be a reception after the service at the family’s home on Catchpenny Lane.  Parking:  The city has been informed of the funeral, so there will be no ticketing of cars parked in permit or metered spaces during the funeral.  Please keep Lay’s wife Ann and their family in your prayers during this difficult time.  Rest eternal grant to Lay, O Lord: and let light perpetual shine upon him.

Food + Fun + Fellowship = Foyer Groups!
St. Peter’s is organizing Foyer Groups for this fall and you’re invited to participate!  A Foyer Group is like a supper club for church members and is a great way to get to know other members of St. Peter’s in a relaxed setting with a simple meal.  Eight people are assembled into a group (four couples or a combination of couples and singles).  Once a month for four months, a different member of the group hosts a dinner at home for the other members of the group. The host provides a main dish and beverages with the others bringing an appetizer, a salad, a dessert, etc.
Groups will be contacted in late August with the intention of having a dinner in September, October, November, and December. We hope to continue with new groups in the spring.  Sign up forms will be available in church beginning this Sunday.  You can also sign up by sending your name(s), telephone number and email address to the Foyer Group Coordinator, Ann Allen, at

Acolyte and Crucifer meeting August 18
There will be a meeting of all Acolytes and Crucifers Sunday August 18 after the 10am Service so that Father David can go over some changes to the Sunday worship services and give Acolytes and Crucifers a chance to practice and ask questions.  If you are an Acolyte or Crucifer, please stay a few minutes after the service.  We’ll meet in the church.  Thank you.

Fall Sunday Worship Schedule Announced
After Labor Day we will return to a three service Sunday Schedule.  Beginning on Sunday, September 8, the service start times will be:
7:45am  Said Rite I Holy Eucharist
9:00am  Contemporary Family Rite II Holy Eucharist
10:15am Sunday School (begins Sept. 15)
11:00am  Sung Rite II Holy Eucharist

Parish Picnic at Green Hill Aug. 25
Come to St. Peter’s Parish Family Picnic after the 11am worship service on Sunday, August 25 at historic Green Hill Church.  The parish will provide the chicken, drinks and paper products.  Tables and tents will be set up.  Parishioners are asked to bring a side dish, salad or dessert to share, and lawn chairs.  It will likely be very warm, so dress casually and cool.

Green Hill Sunday is a tradition started in the mid-nineteenth century when all the parishes of the mother church at Green Hill would come together around St. Bartholomew’s Feast Day (Aug. 24) for Sunday worship.  This year, St. Peter’s will join with St. Alban’s, Salisbury; St. Philip’s, Quantico, St. Paul’s, Hebron, and St. Mary’s, Tyaskin in worship and picnicking after the service.  Fr. David is the Preacher this year, and St. Peter’s will join with St. Alban’s in a combined choir (practice is Aug 22 at 7pm in choir room and one hour before the Aug. 25 service).  Flyers with directions to Green Hill
Church will be available in church this Sunday at both worship services.
