ASCENSION DAY SERVICE – MAY 25
After his suffering Jesus presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. Then, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. (Acts 1:3,9)
On the 40th Day of Easter the church celebrates the Ascension of Our Lord, which this year falls tomorrow, May 25. This is one of the 7 Principal Feasts of the church year St. Peter’s will be observing this joyful feast in prayer and music with Holy Eucharist this Thursday, May 25 at 7pm. All parishioners are encouraged to attend.
GOOD TURNOUT FOR ST. PETER’S SPRING MUSIC CONCERT
Over 65 people attended St. Peter’s Spring Music Concert last Sunday afternoon at the church and were treated to wonderful performances by the Key Singers, the Grace Notes Hand Bell Choir, Peter’s Voice and St. Peter’s Adult Choir. This concert signals the conclusion of a successful year of growth in the parish’s music ministries as well as raising some money for the Music Fund. At the concert, the directors of the ensembles who make up the members of St. Peter’s Music Ministry Team were acknowledged with great appreciation for their work over the past year with a standing ovation. Your Music Ministry Team members are: Brittany Spicer (Team Leader and Contemporary Worship Band Director), Calvin Collins (Key Singers Director), Rick Fahey (Peter’s Voice Leader), Megan Fenoglietto (Grace Notes Hand Bell Choir Director) and Robert Young (St. Peter’s Adult Choir Director and Organist).
PARISH OFFICE CLOSED FOR MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND
Please note that the Parish Office will be closed this Friday, May 26 and Monday, May 29 for the Memorial Day weekend.
MEMORIAL SERVICE ON MEMORIAL DAY
There will be a Memorial Eucharist on Monday, May 29 – Memorial Day – at 8:30am in the church in remembrance of those who gave their lives in service to this nation. Today is the last day to submit names of those loved ones who died to be prayed for at the service: send names to email@example.com. All are invited to begin their Memorial Day observances in prayer and remembrance at St. Peter’s (note: this service replaces the usual Monday 9:30am Morning Prayer for the day).
VESTRY PLANNING FOR A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
The Vestry has decided to organize a capital campaign to raise funds for new roofs, HVAC systems, organ console, and to retire the mortgage on the Parish Annex. A committee is being formed to plan this work. Much preliminary planning, organizing, and information gathering needs to be done over the next few months. Once this work is completed, the campaign will be presented to the congregation. Stay tuned.
PARISH PICNIC SUNDAY JUNE 4
St. Peter’s annual Parish Picnic is on Sunday, June 4 at 11am and will be held once again at Cedar Hill Park on the Nanticoke River in Bivalve, 19 miles from St. Peter’s Church. Allow yourself about 30 minutes from town to get there. The Fellowship and Hospitality Committee is organizing the picnic and will be cooking hot dogs and hamburgers, and providing drinks and all the paper products. Parishioners are asked to bring a salad, side dish or dessert to share. There is a sheltered pavilion, a playground, and lots of places to run around and play for kids of all ages.
We will begin with an outdoor Eucharist with music provided by Peter’s Voice. This is also the time when we honor our youth and teachers with awards and recognition. Please bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on during the service. The Sunday of the picnic is also the Day of Pentecost so don’t forget to wear red if you have it!
The Eucharist will be followed by the picnic. This is a wonderful opportunity for the parish to come together and have some good fellowship and fun, and to enjoy the beauty of the park and the views of the Nanticoke River. Plan to attend and invite your friends and family to join us!
Note that on June 4 the service schedule is: 8am Holy Eucharist Rite I at St. Peters; 11am Holy Eucharist Rite II at the picnic at Cedar Hill Park.
Directions to Cedar Hill Park from St. Peter’s: Take Rt. 50 West to Nanticoke Road (Rt. 349). Left on Nanticoke Road. Go 17 miles and the turnoff for Cedar Hill Park will be on your right. (Note that on Nanticoke Road you will go past St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and then sign for the park will be on your right about 2 miles past the church).
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL: SAVE THE DATES
This summer’s Vacation Bible School, sponsored by St Peter’s and the other Episcopal Churches of the Wicomico Cluster, will be held August 7-11, 9am-12 pm, at St Albans Episcopal Church on Mount Hermon Road in Salisbury. Theme is "Abundance Orchard: Where faith grows and hungry people are fed." Save the dates and plan to have your children, grandchildren, and any other youth who enjoy learning about God and having fun attend
Parishioner Sherri Hall is our representative on the VBS Planning Committee and she is encouraging a good turnout of volunteers from St. Peter’s – let’s help our youth with an overwhelming show of support. Sherri reports that “We need volunteers for gardening, crafts, guitar player, set up, take down, as well other help, and leaders. The majority of the time will be outside under trees and we will have two days of water play.” Contact Sherri at firstname.lastname@example.org if you can help or if you’d like more information.
ST PETER’S WEARABLES SALE ON JUNE 11
St. Peter’s Evangelism Committee is presenting the congregation with an opportunity to purchase shirts and other “wearables’ with St. Peter’s name on them as a way of showing your St. Peter’s pride to others and to help spread the word about our church. There will be samples of different clothes items on display at coffee hour on Sunday, June 11 and orders can be taken at that time. Contact committee chair Chris Hall for more information. Plan to come by coffee hour that Sunday and see what’s available.
AED TRAINING JUNE 11
St. Peter’s has installed an AED unit and there will be a training for those who want to be certified on Sunday, June 11 after the services at 12noon. A light lunch will be served. Contact Linda Hurley if you are interested.
SOPHIE WALTON GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL
In the office this week we received a high school graduation announcement for Sophie Walton, daughter of the Rev. Lin and Nancy Walton. Those who have been at St. Peter’s for a while may recall that Father Lin was an associate priest at St. Peter’s back in the early 2000’s and Sophie was baptized at St. Peter’s on January 9, 2000. Lin and Nancy sent along a photo of her and the family. They are living in Arden, North Carolina and Fr. Lin is the chaplain at St. Giles Chapel in Ashville. In the photo Sophie is 3rd from the left and Nancy is to the left of her. Fr. Lin is on the far right. My how the years go by…..
