Peter's Post

PLEASE NOTE: In this edition of Peter's Post a two week Sunday Service Schedule and Parish Calendar have been included. There will be NO Peter's Post on Feb 5th due to Father David's vacation.  Thank you for your understanding.

Feast of the Presentation: Feb 2

This Sunday we will celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple.  The feast day of the Presentation is February 2 and whenever it  falls on a Sunday, the Presentation is celebrated at our worship services.

It is the last feast in our calendar year associated with Christmas, coming 40 days after Christmas, and commemorates the story in Luke 2:22-40 when Joseph and Mary took the infant Jesus to the temple when he was 40 days old, according to Jewish law.  In Exodus it is written that every firstborn son had to be dedicated to God in memory of  the Israelites’ deliverance from Egypt, when the firstborn sons of the Egyptians died and those of Israel were spared (Exodus 13:2, 22:29).

Included in the story is Simeon, a man who was promised by God that before his death he would see the Messiah.  Simeon recognizes Jesus in the temple, and in Luke’s gospel Simeon responds with the Song of Simeon, the Nunc Dimittis, which is a canticle customarily said or sung in Evening Prayer as part of the church’s Daily Office.

Celebration of the Presentation dates from the fourth century in Jerusalem.  It was introduced in Rome in the seventh century, where it included a procession with candles and the singing of the Nunc Dimittis.  The celebration, which included the lighting and blessing of candles carried in procession, came to be known as “Candlemas.”

So while you may be greeted by someone on February 2 with the salutation “Happy Groundhog Day,” you can reply to them:  “And a Happy Candlemas to you!”

This feast day is also known as the Purification of Mary, for Jewish law declared a woman who has given birth to be ritually unclean and not allowed to take part in religious observances for 40 days, when she would travel to the temple in Jerusalem and present herself to a priest in the temple, and be declared ritually clean and able to rejoin the Jewish community and religious life.

Father David on Vacation

Our Rector, Father David, will be on vacation with Kelli beginning January 30 through February 12.  The Rev. Laura Dorsey, recently retired as the priest at St. Mary’s Church, Tyaskin, will be the guest celebrant on Sundays while he is away.  For pastoral emergencies please contact Senior Warden Gil Allen or Junior Warden Mac Peverley who can make arrangements for clergy and support from the parish while Father David is away.  The Parish Office will continue to be open normal hours during his absence.

No Wednesday Noon Eucharist

There will be no Noon Holy Eucharist at St. Peter’s on Wednesday, February 5 and Wednesday, February 12, as the Rector is away.  Wednesday services will resume on February 19.
